Just pass it?
The referee checked his watch, and he decided after a very crucial 90 minutes to put an end to the match. We have won, and it felt good; and not by a minimal score, we won by 3 goals. Smiles and satisfaction were felt throughout the team, somehow to some that might not like it, we deserved it. Arguing was not a theme in our conversations this time, and again it felt pretty good. Yep! It seems that we did well this time, and whoever read this might think we are unbeatable and unstoppable. We could get there but are we there yet? Shooting Stars right now is a total roller coaster ride, imagine a ride that gives goose bumps from the beginning with up and downs on the road and one gets that mix feeling of having fun but a bit of an uneasiness of intrigue that who knows if one might make it to the end or not. Should the team always be wondering if in the next game everything will go as plan? Of what other factor does team uses or relies to determine the outcome of the game? Or better yet can the team be successful without so many questions.
One thing is for sure. Shooting Stars is a very good team. Individually the team has a majority of players that are very talented. Another huge factor is the fact that some of these players have played and known each other for more than a year or two. So the mere statement that the team is not a good team is completely and absolutely, like my brother Kelvin says in his heavy folkloric Nigerian accent: “RUBISH”. Still, one keeps wondering and stumbles, how good is the shooting stars not as individuals but as a team? Can one say that the teammates trust each other and if so why it was the so many passes in between were so few? In football, or futbol as you would say it in my country, passes among teammates is important and the key to a successful team. Especially in my country that’s the basic style of soccer that we identify with. We realize that we are not as fast as the agile Africans, or as strong as the Europeans, but we do carry a basic component which is passing. We have been taught for many generations the purpose and the importance of passing the ball and the precision to execute the passes and of course through balls. (For reference check Colombia National team 1990-1994) Shooting stars carry one small flaw: that is that precision of passing the ball. Sometimes passes are too slow, sometimes is too hard; the player might be running and the ball is passing behind him, or vice versa. Last game the sequence of passing did not go beyond three people, out of 11. One could argue that sometimes there’s no one near so they force or lobs the ball out of their zone. Other could say that the player at that moment wanted to be selfish and felt a Messi moment and thought they could pass the whole team, and score. But whatever the reason passes were not made throughout the game often creating a fifty-fifty chance of losing the ball. I firmly believe in the drill ten passes or ten push-ups in three or less touches. That is probably a great way to know each other, to open our eyes on the field, and to maintain a fast movement with less probable chances to lose the ball. Again individually the players have their own talents but it is the team that will make those individuals successful. Passing is an important tool, the options and derivations of such are limitless. If the team takes advantage of it I can honestly predict an unbeatable and unstoppable team even for those who might read this.
